April Birthstone- The Diamond

April Birthstone- The Diamond
Happy birthday to those born in the month of April! As the Spring season blooms with the promise of new beginnings, we turn our attention to one of the most beloved birthstones, and our personal favorite: The Diamond.

Perhaps most famous for its exquisite sparkle and beauty, durability, and symbolism for eternal love, the diamond also symbolizes good fortune, good health, and courage. People born during this calendar month are perceived as caring, successful, and achieve everlasting love in their relationships.

Join us as we explore the significance of April's birthstone and discover the unparalleled elegance of diamonds in fine jewelry.

The History of The April Birthstone

While the history of birth stones has ancient roots evolving over centuries, the modern birthstone chart was established by the American National Association of Jewelers (now known as Jewelers of America) in 1912. The list standardized birthstones for each month of the year, though variations exist in different cultures and regions. The diamond, however, has been known as the traditional birthstone for April since the Middle Ages.

Throughout history, diamonds have been revered for their exceptional brilliance and unparalleled strength. And while the traditional April birthstone exhibits a clear, brilliant color, natural diamonds can also display “fancy” blue, green, orange, and red hues. Historically, certain diamond colors separated different societal castes from one another, and only rulers could wear the “purest” white and colorless diamonds.

Throughout history and into modern day, diamonds symbolize love, commitment, and eternal beauty, holding a special place in the hearts of those born in April and beyond. As the traditional gemstone for engagement rings, diamonds have always represented everlasting love and the promise of a lifetime together.

The Four C’s of Diamonds

Cut is one of the four C’s of Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight, and is perhaps the most crucial. Cut does not refer to a diamond’s shape, but rather the quality of workmanship and proportion and arrangement of facets. The quality of a diamond’s cut determines the amount of brilliance, sparkle and fire that a diamond shows. Grades range from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Poor”.

Color is one of the four C’s of Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight, and it significantly impacts the value of a diamond. The GIA diamond grading scale ranges from D to Z, with D-grade diamonds exhibiting absolutely no color and Z-grade diamonds displaying the most color while still being considered colorless. While most natural diamonds are considered colorless, they may exhibit small amounts of yellow, brown, or gray, evaluated based on the GIA scale.

Clarity is one of the four C’s of Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight, and measures the amount, size and placement of internal ‘inclusions’ and external ‘blemishes.’ Inclusions include small crystals or fissures within the diamond. Blemishes include chips. Grades range from ‘Flawless,’ which means a diamond has no visible imperfections at 10x magnification, to ‘Included,’ which means a diamond contains a significant number of imperfections. Diamonds with grades down to VS2 (Very Slightly Included) or SI1 (Slightly Included) do not typically have eye-visible inclusions. Diamonds I1 (Included) or lower have inclusions that are eye-visible and can appear less attractive; some of these inclusions might also impact the diamond’s durability.

Carat Weight is one of the four C’s of Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight, and refers to a diamond’s weight. Generally, the higher the carat weight, the larger the diamond and the more valuable the stone. However, how large a diamond appears also depends on its proportions. For example, a one-carat diamond that is wider but has shallow proportions will appear larger than a one-carat diamond with excellent proportions.

Facts about April’s birthstone, The Diamond:

  • Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle at depths of 87-120 miles below the surface, under high pressure and temperature conditions.

  • The April birthstone is not only scientifically harder than any other mineral included on the Mohs hardness scale, but it is also 58 times harder than anything else naturally occurring on the planet.

  • Diamonds are the only gemstone entirely made of one element: carbon.

  • The oldest diamonds are believed to be around 3.3 billion years old, making them some of the oldest materials on Earth.

  • Despite the inclination for the April birthstone to exhibit a clear, brilliant color, naturally occurring diamonds can also display “fancy” blue, green, orange, and red hues.

  • The process of cutting and polishing a rough diamond into a faceted gemstone requires great skill and precision, often involving weeks or even months of labor by highly trained artisans.

  • Diamonds have been prized for their beauty and rarity for centuries and are typically used in fine jewelry, particularly in engagement rings as a symbol of everlasting love and commitment.

  • Despite advances in technology and the availability of laboratory-grown diamonds, natural diamonds continue to be prized for their rarity, beauty, and enduring value.
