Diamond Contoured Wedding Bands – A Trend That is Here to Stay

Plain Contour Wedding Band - A.JAFEE

We have all seen a versatile mix of standard or traditional rings and innovative modern rings in terms of shape, design, craftsmanship, setting, gemstone, etc. Trends keep changing and evolving with time, but there are a few that make their mark unlike others. One such contemporary trend is that of contoured bands.

If the thought of buying a contoured engagement or wedding band for yourself or your partner intrigues you, here is a deep dive into the concept of contoured rings and curved bands. Happy reading!

What are contoured bands?

Contoured bands, as the name suggests, are notched rings that feature a distinct curve on one side. If you are doing your ring and band research online, you are likely to find that contour bands are also referred to as “chevron bands” or “V” wedding bands.

Typically, a contour band is crafted to fit easily and snugly on your ring finger, whether you decide to wear it alone or pair it with your existing ring. If you opt for the latter, a contour wedding band can be designed in a way that ensures it matches the shape, design, and curvature of your engagement ring. So, it stays straight for the most part but curves around the centerpiece of your existing ring, creating a cohesive and beautifully layered look. Most of our customers love taking the “contouring” approach to ensure that the new wedding band sits flush against their engagement ring.

It is natural for first-time buyers to be skeptical about curved bands because there is fear that the ring might not stack well with their engagement ring. However, this is not something that you should worry about. As long as you ensure that the ring size and setting diameter of your engagement ring is measured perfectly, there is no reason why a contoured wedding band would not fit well with it.

Types of Diamond Contour Wedding Bands

Contoured bands come in various types and designs, so it is best to assess available options before you zero-in on one that you want to buy and wear for the rest of your life. Here’s a look at two of the most popular types of diamond contour wedding bands.

  1. The Soft Curve

This type of ring works well if you want a single solitaire design. It features a delicate and gentle curve on its base.

  2. The Large Curve

As the name suggests, this type works better with a relatively larger gemstone or a uniquely shaped stone or setting.

Can You Wear a Contoured Ring Alone?

Sure, regular wedding rings (with a straight band) are common and popular. However, there is no doubting the fact that you can also do the same with a contoured band. In concept, it might seem like the ring would look incomplete, but that is seldom the case. Most contour bands look great even when they are not paired with engagement rings. However, if you want a work around, you can try wearing your contoured wedding band upside down and hide the curved bit on the inside of your finger.

What are the special features of contour bands?

  1. Achieve that “complete” look

When you pair your existing engagement ring with a complementing wedding band, they look like they were meant to be worn together!

  2. Create a secure ring setting

When worn together with other rings, a contour band adds a layer of security and stops your other ring from spinning freely and involuntarily.

  3. Get that “personal” touch

Custom rings are more personal because you are closely involved in the ideation and design process. Jewelry makers like A.JAFFE ensure that your ideas and concepts are taken into consideration while custom-designing a contour ring for you. Personalized rings, for obvious reasons, have more sentimental value than readymade ones.

Caring for a Diamond Contour Wedding Band

Keeping your ring in impeccable shape and condition should not be an uphill task. With a little bit of cleaning and polishing, you can ensure that your contour band stays shiny and sparkling. All you need to do is use a solution of dish soap with warm water to clean your ring. You can use a soft toothbrush to get rid of any grime, grease, or dirt that may have accumulated on the band or around the grooves of the setting of the stones. Once you do this, you should rinse your ring and dry it thoroughly using a soft microfiber cloth. When the ring is completely dry, you can wear it or store it in an airtight container or jewelry box.

While it is possible to polish your contour band at home, we recommend taking it to your nearest jewelry store for professional polishing (at least twice a year).

It is best to avoid wearing your wedding band while doing your daily chores, taking a dip in the pool, or when it can be exposed to cosmetics containing harsh chemicals. Water and chemicals could cause some damage to not just your ring’s base metal, but also the gemstones.
